Year 5 Writing & Comprehension Enrichment Course
About the Course
The Writing and Comprehension Enrichment Course is designed to help Year 5 students with the preparation required in writing and reading to succeed in the Selective High Schools Placement Test and Scholarship Examinations. Students will refine fundamental and basic writing and reading skills, develop an in-depth understanding of various text types and receive weekly personalised feedback from experienced teachers.

High-scoring exemplars are designed to assist students in their understanding of structure, use of language and focus on the stimulus.
Mock Writing Prompts
Weekly writing prompts that mimic the new Cambridge style writing exam will provide students with regular practice to master various text types.
Course Structure
Students will attend a weekly three hour lesson specifically designed to build a strong foundation in writing and english.
The class is structured as follows:
- Writing: Students will learn how to structure and write various text types, perfect writing techniques and refine language and expression. Students will complete various writing exercises and engage in constructive class discussion.
- Grammar, Punctuation and Sentence Structure: Grammar and sentence construction exercises are provided for students to refine their use of language.
- Reading Comprehension: Students will analyse a variety of text types, complete reading comprehension exercises with the guidance of the teacher, and develop an enhanced understanding of literary techniques.
Highlights of the Course
- Weekly Writing Practice: Each week students will be issued a writing question similar to that students would receive in the Selective Schools Placement test.
- Vocabulary: A vocabulary list is provided each week for students to learn and practise using at home. Vocabulary words are quizzed in the next lesson.
- Various Writing and Reading Exercises: A variety of writing, sentence building and reading exercises are contained in the weekly material for students to complete at home.
All homework will be individually marked each week. In particular, students will receive personalised feedback, suggestions and corrections from teachers and tutors. Students will also receive a writing exemplar each week, providing an example of what a high-achieving writing piece looks like.
